History and Overview
ASA-IM opened its first international office in Beijing, China in 1982. A second office was opened in Shanghai, China in 1993.
ASA-IM staff and consultants work closely with China's livestock producers, feed millers, aquaculture industry, soybean processors and the traders and distributors who supply their needs. ASA-IM's work in China over the past 25 years has enhanced the technology and thus the efficiency and productivity of China's livestock, aquaculture and feed industries.

Industry Statistics
- China is the largest export market for U.S. soybeans with over 435 million bushels (11.8 million metric tons) exported during the most recent marketing year, which was 40 percent of all exports
- Since 2002, the value of China's agricultural imports has more than doubled, with soybeans accounting for 30 percent of the increase
- All imported soybeans are crushed into soybean meal and oil; the meal for animal feed and the oil for cooking
- Poultry is the largest consumer of soybean meal at 60 percent; 22 percent goes to swine and 18 percent to aquaculture
- Soymeal inclusion rates in animal feed has doubled while feed production has only increased 50 percent
- Soy protein production for food use more than doubled in the last year reaching a total of 7.3 million bushels
- China's aquaculture industry, which is the largest in the world, uses over 150 million bushels of soybeans annually compared to zero a decade ago
