         India's Aquaculture Industry Embracing Benefits
of Soy-based Aquafeed

As the second largest freshwater fish producer in the world, India is a prime audience for incorporating soy-based aquafeed into their aquaculture industry. ASA-IM has been working to educate India's fish farmers and feed mills about the benefits of using soy-based aquafeeds and as a result of these efforts, three feed mills are now producing floating soy-based feeds. India's fish farmers traditionally use an manure-based culture to produce their fish..

USB Director Roy Bardole, along with the USSEC and ASA-IM aquaculture team, recently visited proposed demonstration sites for 2007 projects and met with the cooperating farmers and feed millers to finalize activities. During their visit, the group participated in a technical seminar on feed-based fish farming and the launch of a floating fish feed, an event that was broadcast over a local television network. Bardole presented the keynote address at the event, which had over 80 people in attendance including representatives of the Central Institute of Fisheries Education, the premier central government organization for promotion of freshwater aquaculture in India.

The activities of the U.S. Soybean Export Council to expand international markets for U.S. soybeans and soy products are made possible by producer checkoff dollars invested by the United Soybean Board and various State Soybean Councils, support from cooperating industry, and through the American Soybean Association's investment of cost-share funding provided by USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service.
