International Festival in India Focuses
on
Soy Food for the 21st Century

ASA Director Dennis Jaeger and USSEC CEO Dan Duran participated in the international soy food exhibition and festival with the theme "Soya  – Food for the 21st Century" held in Chennai, India. The four-day event was organized by ASA-IM and the Soy Food Promotion and Welfare Association and included an "International Soy Foods Trends" seminar and a "Taste the Soy" workshop.

At the seminar, which was attended by more than 100 soy food manufacturers, speakers from India, the United States, Thailand, Japan and Mexico shared their experiences in promoting soy foods. Two USSEC members, Wenger and Microsoy, along with ADM and Solae, were among the four U.S. participating companies. At the "Taste the Soy" workshop, over 200 recipes were entered into a competition for the most innovative and delicious products.

While India is still a fledgling market for soyfoods, a great deal of progress has been achieved over the past six years. With continued promotional efforts, it is anticipated that by 2010, 1 million metric metric tons of soybean equivalent will be consumed as human food in India. Today, the figure stands at 650,000 metric tons.

The activities of the U.S. Soybean Export Council to expand international markets for U.S. soybeans and soy products are made possible by producer checkoff dollars invested by the United Soybean Board and various State Soybean Councils, support from cooperating industry, and through the American Soybean Association's investment of cost-share funding provided by USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service.
