South Korea Aquaculture Team
Observes Lessons Learned in China

March 30, 2007 - As one of the top ten aquaculture producing nations in the world, South Korea faces the same need as other cultured fish-producing nations, the need for a renewable, economical and quality protein source for their aquafeeds.

Working in collaboration with the ASA-IM China office, In Soo Shin, ASA-IM Korea's Technical Program Director arranged for a group of Korean fish growers, feed millers, feed ingredient suppliers and fish nutritionists to observe the aquaculture industry in China and share with them the success of using floating soy-based aquafeeds. The team visited the Ocean Cage Aquaculture Technology (OCAT) cages and observed grouper, cobia, pompano and tilapia hatcheries and grow-out operations located in Guangdong and Hainan and the Guangdong Fishery Development Center.

The ASA-IM Korea office is working with the government of Korea to help the fish farmers adopt extruded aquafeeds in place of the use of moist pellets they are currently using.  Since the majority of Korea's fish aquaculture production is with marine fish, they are particularly interested in offshore production. The group was very impressed with results of feeding demonstrations using soy-based aquafeeds with the Ocean Cage Aquaculture Technology (OCAT).

The activities of the U.S. Soybean Export Council to expand international markets for U.S. soybeans and soy products are made possible by producer checkoff dollars invested by the United Soybean Board and various State Soybean Councils, support from cooperating industry, and through the American Soybean Association's investment of cost-share funding provided by USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service.
